Feeling beyond sick to my stomach when I woke up this morning. I feel as though we all neglect to see racism as a potent aspect of our world. Seeing as I do not face it, I neglect the fact that it still exists today. Boy, was I wrong. There are thousands of videos of white individuals who cross violent lines while the protocol to take down these citizens are as "extensive" as using a taser. But, a man that cooperates, is respectful, and explains his moves beforehand is shot point blank. In another incident, Alton was held to the ground by two officers, barely struggling and was shot a multitude of times for no reason what so ever. I have only heard of the Alton Sterling and the Falcon Heights shooting, but two accounts are just two, too many. I am sure these two publicized incidents are not the only horrific exemplifications of law injustice over the span of one day - which is sad to say.
What else can this be besides a blatant abuse of power and misconstrued mindset of racism. To be pulled over for a broken taillight and a man simply selling CDS, both to be shot multiple times to death is quite frankly one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. My heart is broken today for all those who have experienced any form of racism/ fallen under the unfair balance of the authority/power scale. It seems as though minorities will continue to face horrific abuse of this power until we all stand together, brothers and sisters, to not let another incident like this pass us by unfazed and unscathed. My skin colour may be white, but my heart is that of a rainbow and recognizes that if white, male privilege and power is only going to be recognized and considered valuable, then I will be DAMNED if my voice isn't used to advocate for equality, love and PEACE! No matter who you are, your background, colour of your skin, sexuality, your class or gender, let's stand together and not let another innocent individual's death go by without taking a hard look at our community - a hard look at those who are put in power to serve and PROTECT.
Sickened and upset today. If you follow the hashtags #AltonSterling & #FalconHeightsShooting, the videos of raw footage is up to see - keep in mind the footage of both men are raw. (To read these events, please click the hashtags above - or search these hashtags on twitter for the raw footage). I don't think I can ever get the images out from my head, and I don't want it to. How many more senseless deaths are we going to endure before police brutality is called into consideration and question with retrospect to minorities? How many more senseless deaths need to happen over seas and in our backyards which we neglect and make excuses for? When will we wake up and see the injustice staring at us right in our face yet chose to ignore it? I for one, can't keep seeing these deaths and live my life silencing my words.
Racial disparities still exist today, and now with the access of technology, these moments that will rest on my heart and thoughts are there for the world to see for its complete and utter injustice. These incidents plague my heavy heart. I hope to be seen as a sister in these times of strife. My love and empathy is sent out to the world today and all the loved ones who are facing difficult times today.
BLACK LIVES MATTER, MINORITIES MATTER, LGBTQ COMMUNITY MATTERS! PEOPLE MATTER! Oppression is a tactic used to keep the hierarchy in line, I hope that one day the world will never have to face these injustices. But for now, I will only use my words to promote peace and hope one day the world can follow suit.
